WHY CHOOSE SLATE?
Natural slate roofing is simply the best roofing material available. It is the most durable, stable, longest lasting, and most attractive material you can put on your roof. Naturally created over millions of years, slate is both abundant and environmentally friendly.
Having a slate roof is one of the most impressive and prestigious roofs to have on your home, also considered to be one of the most expensive. Slate has been used for centuries, lasting decades and creating a distinctive looking roof, which will also sustain the harsh New Zealand climate. If installed correctly slate can last in excess of 100 years with little maintenance required.
Slate provides a classic look which modern roofing simply cannot match. It doesn’t warp, is mostly impervious to water, and though beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, most agree there are fewer ways to make a bigger statement.
SLATE MAINTENANCE
Simple maintenance is needed for this type of roofing. There is no cleaning for slate like for clay tiles. Slate needs only periodic patch maintenance should a slab fall off or crack.
The most common problems resulting from slate repairs and installation are faulty layout and bad flashing. Repairing slate is a hard task so some homeowners may skimp on the quality of their handiwork, damaging the effectiveness of the repair job and essentially costing more money than if they called in a professional in the first place.
Another problem is homeowners or sneaky roofers who use tar or cement to attempt to make the slate waterproof. This only deteriorates the slate, which does not need a coating.
Bad slates are obviously in need of repair when they look flaky or cracked, or missing altogether. This job is best left to professionals who have experience in replacing slate roofs. Regular scheduled inspections of your roof, by a qualified professional, will ensure that you get the best lifespan for your slate roof, while avoiding expensive repairs.
BENEFITS OF SLATE ROOFS
If installed correctly, by an experienced professional, slate can last in excess of 100 years with little maintenance required. Slate roof systems are:
- Fire Resistance – Slate is a dense metamorphic stone which makes it strong and completely fireproof. This offers offering a big advantage in combating the effects of wildfire and adjacent house fires.
- Longevity – Slate roofs will last much longer than almost any other type of roof. Slate can stay weather-tight for 80 to 100 years with only minimal maintenance. Even when a roof reaches this age, it rarely needs to be completely replaced.
- Classic Beauty – Slate has been used on roofs throughout the world for hundreds of years. Roofing slates come in a wide range of natural colours, from classic black, grey and brown to greenish and even purple tones. Over time, the slate weathers, picking up its own unique characteristics. Machine-made roof coverings tend to look the same until they wear out and must be thrown away.
